Carl Sagan gyerekkorom egyik nagy hőse volt (pl. Bruce Lee mellett:)). Biofizikus, csillagász meg ki tudja még mi. A tudomány nagyon széleskörű megszállottja volt. Tényleg értett mindenhez amiről beszélt. Ritkaság ez. Akkor is, ma is.
Gyerekkorom talán legmeghatározóbb, de biztos, hogy egyik meghatározó sorozata volt a Kozmosz (13 része sorozat itt a youtube-on) (az első rész címe magáért beszél: “A kozmikus óceán partjain – ha belenézel az első 10 percbe, végig fogod nézni az egészet, olyanokat fogsz tanulni, mint sehol, senkitől. Carl Sagan is – szuperzseni volt:)).

1977-ben a NASA két pilóta nélküli űrhajót indított az űrbe, a Voyager 1-et és a Voyager 2-t.
Bár eredetileg a Szaturnusz és a Jupiter két éven keresztül történő tanulmányozására készültek, a szondák már rég túllépték céljukat és rendeltetési helyüket, a Naprendszerből is már 2011-ben kiléptek. Mindkét Voyagerhez csatolva van egy aranyozott lemez, az úgynevezett Golden Record – a Földről származó képek, mozgóképek és hangok epikus összeállítása bináris kódba, avagy ez az emberiség végső mixtape-je. A mérnökök azt jósolják, hogy a lemez amit az űrhajókra raktak – egymilliárd évig is kibírja az űrben. Talán nem meglepő, hogy a Golden Record-ot a nagyszerű Carl Sagan ötlete, és az 1939-es New York-i világkiállításon tett gyerekkori látogatása ihlette, ahol tanúja volt a Westinghouse időkapszula híres eltemetésének (lásd a cikket – aszerint egy másik mérnök adta neki ötletként).
És bár a Golden Record története meglehetősen közismert, kevesen tudják, hogy valójában egy varázslatos szerelmi történetről is szó van – Carl Sagan és Annie Druyan, a Golden Record projekt kreatív igazgatójának története, akivel Sagan élete hátralévő részét együtt töltötte.
A The Voyagers (magyarul – angolul az eredeti itt: The Voyagers) Penny Lane videóművész és filmrendező gyönyörű kisfilmje, amely remixelt, köztulajdonban lévő felvételekből készült – élő bizonyítéka a remixkultúra alkotóképességének – a legendás csillagközi utazás történetének és a Golden Record-nak – annak, hogy a film és a történet segítségével egy még nagyobb történetet meséljen, mint az eredeti. Valójában ez egy csodaszép történet a szerelemről és a véletlen ajándékáról. Lane hasonlatként veszi át a Golden Record-ot, „a Valentin-napot, amelyet annak az apró lehetőségnek szenteltek, hogy valami távoli időben és helyen kapcsolatba léphessünk (kapcsolódhassunk)”; ami persze kockázatokkal jár: nem tudhatjuk, majd kik, milyen lények találják meg a Golden Record-okat és milyen szándékkal. Penny Lane mindezt a történetet lefordítja a “Valentin nap”-ra saját „utastársának” (Penny Lane párjának) szóló üzenetként is, miközben tiszteletét fejezi ki Sagan szelleme és öröksége előtt is.
Azaz ez a kisfilm Penny Lane párjának készült – neki készítette – ajándékba. Közben Carl Sagan és Annie Druyan történetét meséli; Carl Sagan és Annie Druyan együtt dolgoztak a projekten – a közös történetük egy közöttük zajlott nagyon sokadik egy+ órás telefonhívással kezdődött. A hívás végén valójában a semmiből “előkerülve” megegyeztek, hogy összeházasodnak (bár még soha meg sem csókolták egymást előtte, sőt, Carl Sagan házas volt). A történet egészen Carl Sagan haláláig tartott.
“Carl és én tudtuk, hogy a véletlen haszonélvezői vagyunk: hogy a tiszta véletlen hogyan lehet annyira kegyes, hogy megtaláljuk egymást a tér és az idő végtelenségében.
Tudtuk, hogy minden együtt töltött pillanatot, mint végtelenül valószínűtlen és végtelenül értékes véletlent kell gondoznunk.” ~ Annie Druyan

Nehéz elképzelni, hogy a Golden Record ma készülne, de képzeljük csak el… bárcsak itt lenne Carl Sagan, hogy azt mondja:
„Tudod mit!?? Ezermillió év? Valóban hosszú idő! Senki nem tudhatja, mi fog majd történni. De miért ne próbáljuk meg? Miért ne nyúljunk valami csodálatos után?”
Mert nincs mód arra, hogy megelőzzük azt, aminek nem tudunk a végső végére járni; nem – nincs mód arra, hogy kitaláljuk, mi bánt majd vagy sért majd minket, amitől meg akarjuk védeni magunkat.
Tudnunk kell: hogy szeressünk, mindent kockára kell tennünk: meg kell nyitnunk magunkat a kapcsolatra – akár a katasztrófa lehetőségével is számolva.”

Carl Sagan was one of my childhood heroes (Bruce Lee being the other:)).
Biophysicist, astronomer and who knows what else. He was very much obsessed with science. And he understood many subjects. Deeply. It is a rare phenomenon – then and now, as well.
My childhood is perhaps the most defining, but certainly one of its defining series was Kosmosz (13-part series here on YouTube) (the title of the first part speaks for itself: “On the shores of the cosmic ocean – if you watch the first 10 minutes, you will watch the whole thing , you will learn things like nowhere, from no one. Also Carl Sagan – he was a super genius:)).

In 1977, NASA launched two unmanned missions into space, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Though originally intended to study Saturn and Jupiter over the course of two years, the probes have long outlasted and outtraveled their purpose and destination, on course to exit the solar system this month. Attached to each Voyager is a gold-plated record, known as The Golden Record — an epic compilation of images and sounds from Earth encrypted into binary code, the ultimate mixtape of humanity. Engineers predict it will last a billion years. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Golden Record was conceived by the great Carl Sagan and was inspired by his childhood visit to the 1939 New York World’s Fair, where he witnessed the famous burial of the Westinghouse time capsule. And while its story is fairly well-known, few realize it’s actually a most magical love story — the story of Carl Sagan and Annie Druyan, the creative director on the Golden Record project, with whom Sagan spent the rest of his life.
The Voyagers is a beautiful short film by video artist and filmmaker Penny Lane, made of remixed public domain footage — a living testament to the creative capacity of remix culture — using the story of the legendary interstellar journey and the Golden Record to tell a bigger, beautiful story about love and the gift of chance. Lane takes the Golden Record, “a Valentine dedicated to the tiny chance that in some distant time and place we might make contact,” and translates it into a Valentine to her own “fellow traveler,” all the while paying profound homage to Sagan’s spirit and legacy.
The Voyagers (original in Hungarian – English here: The Voyagers) is a beautiful short film by video artist and filmmaker Penny Lane, made from remixed, public domain footage – living proof of the creativity of remix culture – the story of the legendary interstellar journey and the Golden Record – the to use the film and the story to tell an even bigger story than the original. It’s actually a beautiful story about love and the gift of chance. Lane takes the Golden Record as a simile, “the Valentine dedicated to that tiny chance to connect (connect) in some distant time and place”; which, of course, involves risks: we cannot know who and what kind of creatures will find the Golden Records and with what intention. Penny Lane translates all of this story into “Valentine’s Day” as a message to her own “passenger” (Penny Lane’s partner), while also paying tribute to Sagan’s spirit and legacy.
In other words, this short film was made for Penny Lane’s partner – she made it for him – as a gift. Meanwhile, it tells the story of Carl Sagan and Annie Druyan; Carl Sagan and Annie Druyan worked together on the project – their shared story began with one of the many one-hour+ phone calls between them. At the end of the call, they actually “appeared” out of nowhere and agreed to get married (although they had never kissed each other before, in fact, Carl Sagan was married). The story lasted until the death of Carl Sagan
“Carl and I knew we were the beneficiaries of chance, that pure chance could be so kind that we could find one another in the vastness of space and the immensity of time. We knew that every moment should be cherished as the precious and unlikely coincidence that it was.” ~ Annie Druyan
How sublime it is to lose oneself in the poetry of Lane’s closing words:
It’s hard to imagine the Golden Record being made now. I wish Carl Sagan were here to say, ‘You know what? A thousand billion years is a really long time. Nobody can know what will happen. Why not try? Why not reach for something amazing?’ There is no way to forestall what can’t be fathomed, no way to guess what hurts we’re trying to protect ourselves from. We have to know in order to love, we have to risk everything, we have to open ourselves up to contact — even with the possibility of disaster.”
